Join us in standing up for reproductive health and education. Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding).

During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, [livejournal.com profile] frank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important.

Thank you all for your help in our support for Planned Parenthood. This promotion ends June 1, 2012; LiveJournal is not affiliated with Parent Parenthood. For more information about Planned Parenthood, please visit: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/

As [livejournal.com profile] truepenny said in the post she kindly put up for me, I'm about to move the the UK and trying to get rid of some of my books, and since the Doctrine of Labyrinths series is available on Kindle I thought I'd buy it on that and pass on the copies i already have.

I have Mélusine and The VIrtu in paperback, and The Mirador and Corambis in hardcover; the paperbacks are in "Good" condition (acto Amazon standards ('http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=1161242') ) and the hardcovers in "Very Good" condition.

Let me know if you are interested; I have other books I'm looking to sell, they will be posted here too in future.

ETA:  I have sold The VIrtu and Corambis, leaving Mélusine and The Mirador still available.  I would like $10 for The Mirador and $8 for Mélusine and I accept Paypal.  I will give you my Paypal email if you message me looking to buy either of these boo

This will probably be longer in future, but for right now:

Regarding her reaction to Harry slicing Draco Malfoy open: Yes, it is appalling that she was happy about it, and wanted him out of detention.

But remember Chamber of Secrets? Ginny was possessed and forced to attack people against her will. It was undoubtedly the most terrible part of her life up to then, and may well remain so.

She knows who gave her that book. Small wonder that she'd rejoice at an injury to Lucius Malfoy's only child, after he so carelessly put her through hell. I don't think anyone should expect Ginny to be rational about that family, and it is not fair to take her to task over that particular instance.

I still think she's awfully bitchy and a bad combination with Harry, but that is out of my control.

Well, the polls are in- Nicolas Sarkozy is the new French president. I was puzzling out what I thought, which candidate I'd support, and it was a very difficult decision to make. I believe I would have voted for Segolene Royal; I was not a big supporter of hers, nor do I agree with all of her plans. In fact I find more of Sarkozy's to be good, feasible ideas- her proposal for compulsory education from the age of 3 I found a bit worrying. I wasn't ready for school till I was nearly six, and I think this would have been very bad for the development of children. I also did not get any impression from Madame Royal that her economic policies were either wise or what the citizens of France wanted (nobody, it seems, wants to be stuck in a 35 hour work week).

My vote for Royal would have been a vote against Sarkozy, because, despite whatever I might like in his policies, he is too divisive- he will never have a great deal of support, despite his win (53% is not a comfortable margin). His track record is also poor- his policies and public statements have lead to riots and discontent among both students and the poorer sections of the country. This election saw 80% voter turnout in the banlieues, largely people inspired to do what they could to keep him out of office, and those people must be losing hope of the changes they need to improve their lives.

If he delivers on his promises, he may be very good for France's economy and therefore could help the people he has driven against himself. He will not endear himself to the rest of Europe because he is apparently very pro-American (oh, the horror, apparently). If he does not, I worry for whoever comes after him to pick up the pieces.

This new technology sounds exactly like the "mites" in The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. I am very intrigued.

I decided to write something to be read out tonight, but I don’t really know where to start. There are no individual memories that stand out- I have too many of them. She’s always been there, since I can remember anyone. She is, forever in my mind, in her kitchen, often showing me how to make things- “letting me help” as she taught me things she’d learned from her mother. There are so many simple, everyday memories, maybe they don’t seem noteworthy, but that was it. Great Grandma was always there with me, happy to share her time, her skills and to tell me stories, all about her own life. So many little moments I got to share with her like that, talking and listening to her tell about her life. It’s what I remember most, our conversations and all the stories she’d tell me about when she was young, about her parents and about Great Grandpa. Enough stories that I almost feel like I know them too. I don’t know how many times I listened to some of the same ones, but they never got old. I listened and learned them- I tell them to my friends now, so that they can know her better than they have had a chance to before.

If anyone's interested, the wake is at 7 this evening (it's going on now, too, I don't know till when though). The funeral Mass is tomorrow, ask my mom I guess for where and when. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Can't even remember what funeral home, even though its the same place my grandfather was.
roisindubh211: (LEMUR)
Well, my great grandmother died Wednesday, sometime in the night, in her sleep. I'm trying to write something about our relationship for people to read at the funeral tomorrow, because I can't make it there.

This might be a bit out there and I'm cutting it for HBP spoilers: )

We started discussing it in class today, in comparison to the Titanic. This might not sound like anything to get all weird over, but the fact is we were talking about the damn boat and the arrogance that it was built with, how it "invited its own destruction". Ow. I love that that idea's still there, and not considered something to argue against, just the obvious connection. We deserved it. It was our fault. Its a judgement on us.

Fuck off.

That's what I hate about being in Europe, what I was so scared of for my year in France- this damnable smug hypocracy- "Obviously we're better than you, more socially conscious, less commercial, less capitalistic, less racist, less sexist..." Et cetera

I spent a year not telling my lecturers what country I came from, grateful as all hell for my name and my good accent in French that would keep me from having to talk about it, having to justify myself for the deeds of my country, having to justify my homeland for the opinions of only half of it, for the actions of an (ALWAYS) unpopular president.

I am fucking sick of it. We are not worse than you. We are the same as you. Same issues, same problems, same human beings.

If we deserved, so did you. Watch out and change while you still can, Scrooge. Listen to poor Jacob Marley.

few things are odder than having one's current boyfriend start singing bits of the song one's former boyfriend was singing all summer at work, especially if it's from something like "Avenue Q".

How do people do this? anyone out there overcome that wonderful trait of procrastination? How do you balance school and life? I'm trying to figure out how to get homework done and a paper at the same time- how do people break it down into manageable bits? How do you kick yourself into gear?

Since I'm on here when i have a paper and a lot of homework, I figured I'd make it at least a little constructive. I miss high school- I used to be one of the smart ones. What the hell happened?
roisindubh211: (SNAPE CAN DANCE)
So, it seems to me that I ought to warn you all, I'm coming home this year (yay!) and dragging my Irishman with me. Get-togethers shall ensue, I hope. Depends how many people will be living in my house over vacation...I have lots of cousins. But I'm back from Dec. 11 to Dec. 30, so come find me. Hit me with things if I forget to call- I need to be properly trained.

my cat has injured himself during one of his wanderings. Possible broken foreleg. I am quite sad, but we're taking him to the vet in the morning.

He broke the other leg when he wasn't much more than a kitten, some asshole hit him with a car. Poor cat only escaped being put down by my brother's presence (we couldn't really afford the ridiculous price our old vet gave us, but my brother was six...). He's a tough old soldier and hopefully its just a bad bruising.

I am slightly tipsy from Sangria (lovely stuff indeed, I'm licking the drips from my fingers where i spilled it), and thus I feel like writing.

No wonder so many prolific authors were drunks. I feel suddenly as though I could write an epic, or rather a very long and fluting beautiful lyric poem.

I also just bought myself a new book, which always exhilerates me for a few days. Paper is my drug of choice. Peter S Beagle (whose book I just bought), especially- the few of his (sadly less than numerous) works that I own are all books I read and re-read many times, and still they make me tremble and dream and laugh aloud. Fill me with a sense of life.

I've also been looking at some Madeleine L'Engle books I've never seen or even heard of before. She's relatively well known over here as a sci-fi/fantasy writer (A Wrinkle in Time, for instance. Best book ever to start with "It was a dark and stormy night.") She makes me think about my place in the universe, and the likelihood and ways of God. No matter how I'm feeling, her books bring me back to that same sense of awesome purpose- sometimes my own, sometimes on behalf of the whole earth or each of its tiny tiny particles. Brings me back to a certainty that there is such a purpose, and that the universe itself is good, in and of itself.

And now, some appropriate Baudelaire:

Enivrez-Vous'

demandez quelle heure il est;
et le vent,
la vague,
l'étoile,
l'oiseau,
l'horloge,
vous répondront:
"Il est l'heure de s'enivrer!
Pour n'être pas les esclaves martyrisés du Temps,
enivrez-vous;
enivrez-vous sans cesse!
De vin, de poésie ou de vertu, à votre guise."

-- Charles Baudelaire

to combat boredom at work, I've been mentally adding the phrase "in my pants" to the ends of other people's sentences.

TOday, my colleagues had a long conversation about how to answer someone who wanted to know what kind of lubricant to put on an insertion tube.
That officially made my day.
